Okay, I saw TTT again last night and have made my peace with it (except for the Elves at Helm's Deep). I really enjoyed it much more the second time around, probably because I'm a. not currently reading the book and b. not obsessing over the departures from the text. After all, it is a movie and I can understand that things had to be altered.

I'm also thinking now that I'm glad that they left out those three chapters. Especially the very last one. I couldn't last a whole year with everyone in that sort of peril.
