Second Day of Classes
2003-09-11 @ 11:01 a.m.

There really isn't an opportune time to get sick ever, but why on the second day of class? It isn't Martian Death Flu, thankfully, but it is one of those stuffy head, sore throat, sinus pressure, low-grade fever things that makes activities such as breating, paying attention in class, and stay upright for extended periods of time a might difficult.

Classes yesterday were interesting. I really have no idea whether or not this is going to turn out to be a bad quarter or a good quarter yet. My Politics and Culture in Medieval Japan class looks like it has neat books, we're working with material culture stuff, and there are no assigned papers. Prof Nakajima is okay once you get used to the accent, but I'm skeptical that the class will be able to run well as discussion-based rather than lecture-based. We have 45 people in there, which means, if we can start a discussion, it'll end up being dominated by the same 5-10 people while everybody else just sits there doing their inanimate carbon rod impression. Dr. Burton's plan for American Social History and Culture is... ambitious. He's trying to cover American history from colonization to Vietnam in 10 weeks. Suuure, John, we can do that. He's a good lecturer, the material is engaging, the course work isn't too heavy (6, 2-page papers is a comparative breeze), but his choice of text book sucks. I read my assignment for Friday, and it's this stupid, boring, Sophomore-year-of-high-school, abridged (which automatically makes it evil), piece of bantha fodder. The book of case studies, however, seems okay.

Oy, need soup before class.
