Marxism and Sloppy Eating
2003-07-29 @ 6:12 p.m.

I just made me self dinner. One that, for the first time in a number of weeks that did not emerge, ready-made from a box. Nope, a real dinner with unprocessed food and requiring multiple pots. Lovely. It's times like these that I have to admit that Karl Marx wasn't a total wack job. Well, the soley economic basis for society is just incorrect and his history-as-a-series-of-class-struggles theory is a bit dodgy (as is any theory that attempts to explain the whole of history as a series of reoccuring anything; goddamn reductionism), but he may have been on to something about alienation from the means of production. Dinner, for example: tangable proof that one is capable of sustaining one's self (even if you have to ignore that you did not actually produce the food as I sure as hell did not grow the tomatoes for the tomato sauce). Sometimes it just feels good to use one's own hands, to make something whole and good or useful out of component parts. It makes it that much better knowing that you did it yourself. It's that human egotism kicking in.

Thought of the Day:

I'm having one of those days where every other word out of my mouth wants to be an explitive.
